Frequently asked questions

What is GOSI in Saudi Arabia?
GOSI (the General Organization for Social Insurance) is Saudi Arabia's social insurance system. It collects monthly contributions from employees and employers to fund pensions, occupational hazard cover, and unemployment insurance (SANED) for eligible workers.
Do expats pay GOSI?
Expats themselves do not pay GOSI contributions. Their employer pays a 2% Occupational Hazards contribution on the basic salary (capped at SAR 45,000/month). Expats are not covered by the annuities (pension) or SANED branches.
What is included in the GOSI calculation base?
For Saudi nationals, the GOSI base is basic salary plus housing allowance (whether paid in cash or in kind). For expats, it is basic salary only. In both cases the base is capped at SAR 45,000 per month.
What is SANED?
SANED is Saudi Arabia's unemployment insurance scheme for Saudi nationals. The employee contributes 1% and the employer contributes 1% of the GOSI base each month, providing temporary income support after job loss subject to eligibility.
Is there a salary cap for GOSI?
Yes. GOSI contributions are calculated on a maximum monthly base of SAR 45,000. Any portion of salary above this cap is excluded from the contribution calculation for both employee and employer.

How it works

GOSI (the General Organization for Social Insurance) is Saudi Arabia's national social-insurance system, funded jointly by employees and employers. Its purpose is to provide pensions, occupational-injury cover, and unemployment support to eligible workers. Saudi nationals contribute 10% of their GOSI base — 9% for the Annuities (pension) branch and 1% for SANED, the unemployment scheme — and their employer matches with 9% Annuities, 2% Occupational Hazards, and 1% SANED, for a total employer share of 12%. The GOSI base for Saudis is basic salary plus housing allowance. Expatriate workers do not contribute personally; their employer pays only 2% Occupational Hazards on basic salary. In all cases the contribution base is capped at SAR 45,000 per month — any salary above that ceiling is excluded from the calculation. SANED, the unemployment branch, gives Saudi nationals temporary income support after job loss subject to eligibility.
